Due to his time under the watchful eye of Checkers Gil has a bit of kleptomaniac. While he never swipes anything really of 'value' unless it's on a job. Gil will find random lighters, glasses, mugs, ashtrays and the like in his coat pockets.Gil's brother Ashren is a moonshiner who makes what he claims is a "fine sipping whiskey" along with being a high explosive. It uses both natural and unnatural ingredients. The statement of quality on the bottle is labeled, "If you drink this you will die." Gil keeps a few bottles around as an engine degresaser.Gil for some reason most likely due to his travels speaks with a accent that some would find horrifying. In other words? Gil still speaks with an FFXIV: A Realm Reborn American accent sounding like he's from the east coast.He loves the Fat Cat. Mostly due to Gil's player seeing the Fat Cat as the Eorzen Garfield.Gil is the Co-Captain of the Sharlayan Archon Aces EBL Blitzball Team. Normally he plays as the Goalie for the Aces however after the last season he's branching out as a Forward.Gil also enjoys going to matches and events done by Cross Realm Wrestling. And yes he does look sorta like the wrestler "Bluff Eversmoking" he will claim he's not some lazy pot smoking slacker.Due to being a Merc/Bodyguard, Gil like others in his line of work hides weapons and gear like a Nutkin hides nuts.Gil is also a "Test Subject" for his fellow Archon Ace Captain Momun. Namely she has him watch cheesy movies to quote, "H-how else am I supposed to reinforce his braincells?" ((We do a MST3k night and Gil is the Joel/Mike))
Gilane was born to Malory Katarna of the old Katarna family in the city-state of Gridania. While still well off, the family over the last few generations had fallen somewhat in the eyes of other more well known families. Not helped was the fact that Malory was known for being snarky, selfish, bigoted, and jerkish to just about anyone. Two years after Gilane was born Malory would give birth to Gilane's brother Ashren. While both brothers know they are from the same father, who that man is tends to be anyones guess. It's also not helped by Malory having a number of lovers.A few years after his birth it was found that Gilane suffered from unstable aether. This was at first viewed as perhaps a blessing that could have Gilane become a Padjal. It was made clear that the young Gilane wouldn't be growing horns anytime soon. It also was found from a young age that Gilane just lacked the gift for any sort of spell casting. Due to this Gilane was viewed by other children as have some sort of freakish issue. Once again his childhood was not helped by his mothers treatment of him and his brother. She could go from being overprotective to neglectful.Gilane made friends with anyone he could, while unable to cast spells Gilane did learn from watching and a little teaching how to fire a bow and weild a lance. Gil also did grow a bit faster and was viewed as 'tougher' then the other children. He never picked on the other children, he would go after bullies and those picking on the younger. It also helped that the young midlander didn't care about race. Making friendships with Elezen and Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te.Gilane's teenage years saw him leave his home. While he isn't open about why he ran off from his home. What little he tells is that he packed his bags, took whatever he could pawn off and sell for coin, and will mumble something about tell the witch to burn in hell. Gilane who had read books about the ocean made his way to Limsa Lominsa with the idea of signing on with the Maelstrom. Sadly for Gil he was still three years too young to sign on. Knowing he'd have to find work if he wanted to live, he found a job working on one of Limsa cargo docks under a man known as Checkers.Checkers a man known for his love of coin, cake and history, became the father that Gilane never had. He was well known for being fair to his cargo techs as he called them. Paying well and also looking the other way when it came to things in that cargo area going missing. A joke of the area was it was the land of stolen things. The Quartermaster would tell his tech's stories and made sure that they where the best damn cargo movers in Limsa. He also put in a good word for Gilane when he finally was able to enlist with the Maelstrom.Gil served for two years after getting out of training. After those two years he was given an honorable discharge. Gil doesn't speak of why he was given the discharge other then saying he understands why, and that he had a lot of anger at the star in general. He packed up his gear and hit the road becoming a mercenary. Those that knew him said his time in Ishgard did have him lose much of the anger he had in him. He made his way east, spending time in the port city of Kugane. Then making his way west taking a job with the resistance group known as Lente's Tears and meeting a long time friend along with learning how to use a Gunblade. Not long after the job ended Gilane made his way back to Eorzea.Today,Back home Gilane works partly as a freelance bodyguard along with being part of the Red Lantern Society's security team. While he still has his unstable aether issues he's more or less able to deal with it and able to do a few things aether wise. He does have a small home in the Goblet, and keeps an Apartment in Gridania. He will travel back and forth to Sharlayan as he puts time in as a Combat Instructor when Blitzball is out of season. Normally he can be seen at CRW Events, Cirque Shows, Terrarium (It's NOT a Nightclub!) Announcing for the Chocobo Racing League or other events and the like put on by his friends. And no he just looks like Bluff Eversmoking from CRW... He's really not him! (He is.)
